    common errors

  • Improve standardized test scores

What is Sentence Combining?

Sentence Combining teaches students an arsenal of sentence patterns for combining ideas into rich, informative sentences.

Instead of writing short, choppy, unrelated sentences, students learn how to create mature sentences which include more facts and ideas, and which show the relationships among them. Students learn the many options they have for choosing sentence patterns to express their thoughts effectively.

Sentence Combining Improves All Writing Skills.
Numerous research studies show that students who engage in sentence combining improve in virtually every aspect of writing skill.

  • They improve in the overall quality of the papers, reports and professional letters they write.

  • They exhibit fewer spelling and grammatical errors of various types, such as sentence fragments, comma splices, ad garbled sentences.

In sentence combining, students construct sentences based on models of standard written English. Sentences which have complete thoughts, agreement between subjects and verbs, and correct punctuation. Thus, these correct patterns of standard English become internalized.

Sentence Combining Improves Reading Ability.
Studies have confirmed that sentence combining also builds reading skill. To understand this, recall that weak readers can only comprehend short, simple sentences. But in sentence combining, students create more complex sentences from simple ones, and in the process they develop the skill to accurately comprehend complex sentences.

Students who learn to write complex sentences improve their ability to read complex sentences.

Research has found that weak students have difficulty comprehending many types of complex sentences found in academic and professional material. This deters academic progress and occupational advancement. But when students are given guided practice in creating complex sentences, their ability to comprehend such sentences improves dramatically.
Sentence combining provides students with the power to create sentences that are rich and informative, showing relationships between events, situations and ideas. It increases the options students have for conceptualizing ideas verbally. Sentence combining also ensures that students can analyze and comprehend complex sentences in any material they read.

What is Text Reconstruction?
Text reconstruction teaches all literacy skills—from punctuation and grammar to comprehension and organization—through active learning with model papers like those students must write for school and work.

In text reconstruction, students arrange jumbled sentences in the best logical order, an activity which encourages careful reading for full meaning and organization. Next they compare arrangements with a neighbor and discuss any differences, explaining why they ordered the sentences as they did. Then the teacher asks several students to explain their arrangements, and any remaining differences are debated. The teacher uses this opportunity to point out the various logical patterns that can be used for organizing a piece of writing, such as introduction-expansion, temporal sequence, general-specific, and order of importance. Finally students copy the sentences in their arranged order. Copying improves the spelling of both common and technical words, as well as grammar and punctuation skills.
